The Unwavering Confidence of Jesus: A Lesson for Every Salesman

Have you ever found yourself in a high-stakes situation, nervous and questioning whether you’re equipped to handle the task at hand? Salespeople, just like anyone else, frequently wrestle with self-doubt, insecurities, and external pressures. Imagine if you could tap into an unshakeable sense of belief that could empower you in even the most challenging situations.

Let’s talk about Jesus, the man who navigated an incredibly complex world with unparalleled self-belief. This might sound unconventional, but there’s a lot to learn from Jesus when it comes to self-assurance and purpose, both in life and in sales. The content from my book, The Master Salesman: Jesus and the Art of Service, uncovers this connection.

The Steadfast Belief of Jesus

The Bible gives us a robust blueprint of how self-belief can move mountains—literally, in Jesus’ case. He was resolute in His purpose and mission, no matter what came His way.

In the Gospel of John, he boldly proclaimed, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 ESV). These are not the words of someone with wavering confidence. Jesus never allowed external circumstances to deter Him from His mission. His belief in Himself and His divine purpose was unwavering, even in the face of scorn, ridicule, and doubt. Statements like “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30 ESV) further underline His unshakable confidence.

Jesus, like anyone else, faced challenges and doubts. The world’s response to Him fluctuated between adoration and denial, creating a complex backdrop for His ministry. Yet, His faith and belief in His mission and capabilities remained steadfast.

The Power of Belief in Sales

Understanding Jesus’ unwavering belief can give you a fresh perspective on sales, a field often misunderstood as manipulative or purely transactional. One of the essential pillars of successful sales is belief. The Triad of Belief that I talk about lays out three core principles: Belief in your industry, belief in your product or service, and belief in yourself. It’s about transferring that belief to your customer.

How does this tie back to Jesus? Consider the Kingdom of God as Jesus’ industry. It’s not merely a vague concept but a tangible reality that He passionately believed in and promoted. His product was salvation, offered through a relationship with Him, and He was certain about its immediate and eternal benefits. He manifested this belief through actions, resonating stories, and an inspiring vision, serving as an excellent model for anyone in sales.

Belief Transforms Action

The IDEAS Sales System I advocate maps quite closely with Jesus’ approach. He Identified potential followers, Engaged in active listening, Evaluated their needs, Adapted His teachings to be valuable to them, and Served them with love and humility. “Your customer wants to buy. He needs you to help him believe” is a principle that rings true in this context.

A belief that is robust and genuine transforms ordinary encounters into meaningful connections and a shared pursuit of higher goals. Whether it’s about eternal salvation or selling a product, this principle stands firm.

The Ultimate Lesson

Jesus understood the art of service; His entire ministry was devoted to it. He understood that selling—be it an idea, a product, or a revolutionary new way to see the world—ultimately is about service. He demonstrated that commitment to a cause, fueled by authenticity, can transform not only transactions but lives.
