The Intersection of Faith and Confidence: Lessons from Jesus for the Modern Professional

Imagine you’re an ancient merchant peddling your wares in a bustling marketplace. The odds are stacked against you. Everyone’s selling something, and buyers are wary. Now imagine someone walks up to your stall, a man who looks like any other but speaks with a unique authority. He seems to see right through the fog of doubt surrounding you. This man, you soon find out, is Jesus. What can you learn from His way of engaging the world, of standing firm against criticism, and of having a laser-focused mission? Quite a lot, it turns out, especially if you’re a modern professional striving to succeed in today’s competitive landscape.

In my book, The Master Salesman: Jesus and the Art of Service, I explore the surprising but deeply instructive overlap between Jesus’ teachings and principles that drive success in today’s professional world. Now, you may think that Jesus and sales are a strange combo. But when you really delve into His teachings and life, you find timeless wisdom that can elevate your confidence, sharpen your skills, and even reframe your understanding of success.

Overcoming the Doubt Trap

Just like Jesus, we all go through situations that test our self-belief. Whether it’s an imposing client meeting, an ambitious sales target, or a critical project, the challenges we face often awaken our inner skeptic. In the Gospel of Matthew 14:31 (NIV), Jesus tells Peter, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” after rescuing him from sinking while attempting to walk on water. His question is a prompt for all of us. When we start to doubt our abilities, we risk sinking under the weight of our uncertainty.

The Crucial Asset: Self-Confidence

The ability to act assertively, to articulate our value, and to bounce back from rejection is not just a ‘nice-to-have.’ It’s essential for survival in today’s fiercely competitive marketplace. These characteristics all root back to self-confidence, which in turn springs from belief. And that’s where the Triad Of Belief comes into play. You’ve got to believe in the industry you’re in, the company you represent, and most importantly, in yourself. This triad acts as your professional anchor.

Why You Should Believe Even When It’s Hard

Now, believing isn’t always easy, and I’ll be the first to admit it. In my own life, whether it’s my business or my Christian faith, there are moments of real struggle. But remember, even Jesus had His moment of doubt in the Garden of Gethsemane, asking, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39, NIV). Yet, His ultimate faith in His divine mission allowed Him to face unimaginable hardships.
