In the vast world of sales, it’s easy to be so focused on the transaction that we forget the human element. However, any seasoned salesperson will tell you that the genuine connection, understanding, and trust established with a client is the foundation upon which any successful transaction is built. Enter the act of DISCOVERING, a vital step in the IDEAS Sales System that I advocate for.
In my book, The Master Salesman: Jesus and the Art of Service, I delve into how the art of selling isn’t simply about transactions. Rather, it’s a journey into the heart of a customer’s needs, desires, and dreams. This isn’t just about selling a product or service; it’s about connecting with a person on a deeper level, understanding their aspirations, and showing them how your offering can become a part of their solution.
Jesus was the master of this. He connected with people deeply and understood their needs. Jesus’ “Industry” was the Kingdom of God, and his “Product” was Salvation. But more than anything, he exemplified the “Triad of Belief.” He had an unwavering belief in His mission and sought to transfer that belief to all of humanity. Fast forward to today, with billions of Christians worldwide, it’s evident that Jesus’ approach to ‘selling’ was profound and unparalleled.
In sales, like in Jesus’ teachings, the power of DISCOVERING cannot be overstated. If you’ve ever crafted master lists – perhaps from every contact you’ve ever made or every business card you’ve collected – you’ll know the value of every single conversation. Following up on these leads with the INTRODUCING stage – where you make your initial connection – is crucial, but it’s just the beginning.
After making this introduction, it’s easy to think that the job is done, that the connection has been made. But, as emphasized in my IDEAS Sales system, genuine sales success comes when you dive deeper, moving beyond mere introductions to truly discovering the heart of your customer’s needs.
Think of it as a farmer planting seeds. Without understanding the soil’s requirements, how can they expect a bountiful harvest? Similarly, without understanding the unique needs and desires of each potential client, how can we expect our offerings to resonate with them?
This is where the art of DISCOVERING shines. It’s not about pushing your product or rushing to close the deal. It’s about active, patient, and genuine listening. It’s about seeing through the eyes of your customer, empathizing with their perspective, and aligning your offering to their specific requirements. This level of understanding fosters trust and builds the foundation for a lasting relationship.
As someone who has been in the trenches of sales and also a devout Christian, I understand the challenges that come with both worlds. Like many, I’ve grappled with my faith, tried to reconcile personal shortcomings, and constantly strive to be the person I want to be. It’s through these personal experiences and reflections that I’ve come to appreciate the lessons Jesus offers in the realm of genuine connection and sales. The profound approach of DISCOVERING, as practiced by Jesus, teaches us that selling is, at its core, a service – a way to enhance the lives of those we interact with.
I invite you to dive deeper into these principles in The Master Salesman: Jesus and the Art of Service. As you embark on your journey in sales, remember that true success isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the genuine relationships you cultivate along the way.
